Petru Stoianov (born October 29, 1939, in Vinga, Arad County) is a prominent Romanian contemporary composer, academic, and university professor doctor.

Formative Years and Musical Studies

Hailing from a family of Catholic Bulgarians in northern Banat, his early musical development took shape through intensive study with notable mentors in Arad, including composer and conductor Nicolae Brânzeu and choral conductor Doru Șerban. He continued his studies at the conservatory in Iași before moving to Bucharest (at the National University of Music), where he became a dedicated disciple of master Anatol Vieru.

During his conservatory years, he worked alongside an illustrious roster of Romanian musical figures, studying harmony with Florin Eftimescu, counterpoint with Nicolae Buicliu and Dinu Ciocan, form and analysis with Tudor Ciortea, orchestration with Aurel Stroe, music history with Octavian Lazăr Cosma, folklore with Emilia Comișel, aesthetics with George Bălan, and conducting with Constantin Bugeanu and Marin Constantin. He earned dual degrees in Musical Pedagogy (1970) and Musical Composition (1972). Later, he earned his Ph.D. in Music from the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca under the guidance of Valentin Timaru, defending a thesis on modal structures and structural geometry titled Noduri și Semne. Academic and Cultural Leadership

Alongside his creative output, Petru Stoianov built a distinguished academic and administrative career. After years of teaching and serving as an inspector for music schools in Bucharest, he held high-level academic leadership positions. He served as Prodean of the Faculty of Music at the West University of Timișoara and later as Prodean and Dean of the Music and Arts Faculties at Spiru Haret University in Bucharest.

Deeply committed to revitalizing the contemporary cultural landscape, he became a founding member and artistic director of the Jeunesses International Music Competition Romania (jmEvents) and played a prominent administrative role in organizing the International Week of New Music festival in Bucharest. He is a member of the Romanian National Section of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM / SNR-SIMC) and served on the Board of Directors for UCMR-ADA.

Compositorial Style and Recognition

His rich catalog encompasses complex symphonic works, intricate chamber music (such as Heteropsalmia and the Proportions cycle), refined art songs (Lieder) set to verses by poets like Mihai Eminescu, Ștefan Augustin Doinaș, and Nichita Stănescu, as well as extensive choral creations. His contributions have been honored with numerous national and international distinctions, including multiple awards from the Romanian Union of Composers and Musicologists (UCMR), alongside recognitions at international composition competitions in Italy and Spain.
